Most species of Tribulus are perennials.  However in colder climates, some grow as annuals.  The leaves of all Tribulus species are compound and opposite.  The insect-pollinated flowers of the Tribulus plants are hermaphroditic displaying five-fold symmetry.  Some species of Tribulus, especially in warmer climates, are cultivated as ornamental plants.  Other species, including puncture vine, are classified as weeds. Animal modeling has shown Tribulus terrestris to be effective in enlivening sexual behavior.  This is believed to be true due to its ability to stimulate androgen receptors in the brain.  Human studies have failed to show the same, but its popularity continues to grow.  It is believed to promote overall health, aid digestion, support healthy cholesterol levels, maintain balanced blood pressure readings, enhance libido function and increase muscle tone.  While clinical studies have not proven the purported benefits of puncture vine.

There are no established dosing protocols concerning Tribulus terrestris for human use.  Common dosages for users range from 85 to 250 mg three times daily.  Steroidal saponins called furostanol glycosides and spirostanol glycosides are the active compounds in Tribulus and are found primarily in the leaves.  It was in Bulgaria and Russia that research was completed showing Tribulus to increase levels of testosterone, estrogen and DHEA.  These findings are not without dispute.  However, they have not been formally discharged either.

As with all medicinal or herbal concoctions, Tribulus should not be used by pregnant or nursing women. People with breast or prostate cancer should not use Tribulus.  Tribulus terrestris has been shown to cause toxic conditions in sheep. It has been found to cause a chronic, progressive, and irreparable disorder in the dopamine circuits.  This results in impaired muscle function and hindquarter weakness.  The final result is death.
