Clif and Luna BarCLIFF BAR is named after my father, Clifford, my childhood hero and companion throughout the Sierra Nevada mountains.
In 1990, I lived in a garage, with my dog, skis, climbing gear, bicycle and two trumpets.
The inspiration to create an energy bar occurred during a day-long, 175-mile bike ride with my buddy Jay. We’d been gnawing on some “other” energy bars all day. Suddenly, despite my hunger, I couldn't take another bite. I thought, "I could make a better bar than this!" That’s the moment I now call “the epiphany.”
Two years later, after countless hours in Mom's kitchen, the CLIF BAR became a reality. And the mission to create a better-tasting energy bar was accomplished. Thanks, Mom!
The spirit of adventure that began on that bike ride continues to thrive to this day. First-time visitors wonder whether we’re a business, a gym or a community service organization. With climbing walls, dogs, yoga classes and employees running out to volunteer, it is quite an unusual work environment. It all makes perfect sense though, because health, well-being and community involvement are all things we value.
It's an amazing adventure to grow this business to reflect our dreams, passions and beliefs. One thing has been true: it's not about a finish line; it's all about the Journey. And on this Journey, we face many choices, yet we always do our best to take care of our People, our Community and our Environment.
Hopefully, over the years, we've brought some products to your life that support your adventures. We plan on bringing you more in years to come.
At Clif Bar Inc., we're committed to people's health and the environment. We want to make sure the way we do business helps sustain the natural resources and communities that we depend on. That's why we're working to reduce our ecological footprint in everything we do, from the field to the final product.
Our efforts include:
using organic ingredients,
adopting green business practices,
joining the fight against global warming,
supporting our Partners in Sustainability.
Moving toward sustainability is a relatively new journey for our company. We launched our environmental program in 2001 and we have a lot to learn. The more we learn, the more we realize that sustainability has been at the core of our reason for existing—to nourish and inspire people, communities, and the earth.We hope that you will join us. Why us, why Food?
Because food is essential—a basic human need. Food is also a relished source of enjoyment and comfort that ties us to family, community and tradition. The decisions we make about food also affect our environment.
As a food company, we have a more direct connection to agriculture and to the environment than other businesses. This puts us in a special position to contribute to the restoration and improvement of our planet in concrete ways, not only through the organizations we support, but also by the very way we do business.
